SPRING BRANCH — When Texas temperatures climb into the triple digits, thousands of residents head north in search of cooler water, towering cypress trees and a relaxing day outdoors. Just 35 miles from North San Antonio, Guadalupe River State Park has become one of the area’s most popular summer destinations.

The 1,900-acre state park offers nearly four miles of Guadalupe River frontage, giving visitors plenty of room to swim, float, kayak, fish or simply relax along the shaded riverbanks. The clear, spring-fed water remains one of the biggest attractions, offering a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

Unlike some of Texas’ busier river destinations, Guadalupe River State Park provides a quieter atmosphere where families can spread out for picnics, children can safely splash in designated areas, and nature lovers can enjoy the scenic Hill Country landscape.

Visitors will also find more than 13 miles of hiking and biking trails winding through oak woodlands, native grasslands and limestone hills. Wildlife sightings are common, with white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, armadillos and dozens of bird species regularly spotted throughout the park.

For those looking to extend their stay, the park features campsites with water and electric hookups, along with primitive camping options for visitors seeking a more rustic experience. Picnic tables, grills, restrooms and shaded day-use areas make it an easy destination for families planning a full day outdoors.

The park also serves as an excellent launch point for kayaking and paddleboarding. During periods of adequate river flow, paddlers can enjoy scenic stretches of the Guadalupe while surrounded by towering cypress trees and limestone bluffs.

Park officials encourage visitors to arrive early during weekends and holidays, as parking areas often reach capacity by late morning during the peak summer season. Reservations for both day-use entry and camping are strongly recommended, especially around holiday weekends.

Located off State Highway 46 near Spring Branch, Guadalupe River State Park offers an easy drive from Stone Oak, Timberwood Park, Bulverde and other North San Antonio communities, making it one of the region’s most convenient outdoor getaways.
